Chen Yanning, the youngest ever President of the Guangdong Academy of Fine Art in Guangzhou. Although still in his thirties at the time of his appointment, he was one of the most acclaimed artists in China.
In 1986 Chen Yanning and his family moved to America, funded by an American businessman interested in introducing Chinese contemporary art to the USA. That year, Yanning held his first one man exhibition in New York.
His work was then introduced into Britain and achieved his first success, winning a national portrait competition held by Alexon Fashions and the British Federation of Artists. Yanning was ultimately commissioned to paint two portraits which were reproduced in
a special supplement of Vogue magazine and displayed at a prestigious event in The Mall Galleries, of British Artists’ annual Royal Society of Portrait painters’ exhibitions, and was commissioned by the Scottish National Portrait Gallery to paint a portrait for their permanent collection.
His achievements include three Royal Millennium portraits. The Duke of Edinburgh for Trinity House, The Princess Royal for London University, and Her Majesty the Queen for the Honourable Artillery Company. The HAC has also com- missioned him to paint a Millennium portrait of the Lord Mayor of London. Other commissions include Anita & Gordon Roddick and family (The Body Shop), Sir Richard Branson, Jane Asher, The Hon. Simon Howard of Castle Howard, Vis- count and Viscountess Cowdray, Aung San Su Kyi of Burma among many others.
